Thanks for taking the time to visit my website. Whilst I’m not a full-time photographer, I’ve shot for a lot of brands & bands over the years.
I’m currently working as Creative Director, EMEA at global advertising agency, Vertic.
Photography and journalism of both travel and motorcycles is what gets me out of bed in the morning so I’ve taken down my advertising portfolio and decided to simply showcase my photography work in an attempt to encourage myself to make regular updates.
You can reach me on my social channels below, or if you’re so inclined, read the way more long winded back story below. If you want to chat photography or discuss a project, I’d love to hear from you – drop me a line.
I HAVE SHOT FOR
Motorcycle work: BMW Motorrad, Harley-Davidson, Levi’s, Deus Ex Machina, Pipeburn, Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride…
Brand work: Nescafé, Toyota, Pernod Ricard, Europcar, AWOL (Qantas)…
The long STory
My career has made me a city dweller, but I’m a Welsh country boy at heart. From a young age I nurtured my creative instincts within the local music scene, offering design and illustration services to anyone who needed a poster for a show, CD sleeve or merchandise.
Looking to enhance my skill set I moved on to college where I studied a Multimedia diploma, and was able to get my first real look at Digital, finishing top of class with a Triple Distinction.
Natural progression led me on to Advertising school at UWN where Ideas became the forefront, and Design the vehicle to communicate. Here I was able to hone my skills of combining solid ideas with impeccable execution. I completed University top of my class with a 1st Class Honours degree in Creative Advertising.
After a spell in the major music biz, I decided that my thirst for Digital was too strong and left the record industry for a role at LBi London. Here the ideas focus of university shone through as I was moved into a smaller team with high abilities, running quick sprint projects for British Telecom. During my time at LBi I worked across such clients as BT, Barclays, Peroni, LloydsTSB & Virgin Atlantic.
Unable to resist the temptation of an Aussie summer and the opportunity to work under globally renowned Creative Director, Xander Black, I took an Art Director role in sunny Sydney at HotHouse, one of Australia’s leading agencies that held the Toyota account for over 15 years. Here I led the Art department across all accounts including Toyota, Red Bull & BP learning how to effectively communicate ideas to the client as well as the team and see those ideas through to fruition.
During my time at HotHouse, LBi were opening an office in Sydney where I later joined an office of 5 as Creative Lead, APAC. My role at what is now DigitasLBi, really spanned the distance of an entire Creative department, covering every facet from junior work to leading pitches, Creative strategies and relationship building as we have grew to 50+ desks. I was lucky enough to work on clients from several sectors including Nescafé, Pernod Ricard, Europcar, Mastercard & Blackberry.
Fast forward 3 years and I find myself in Copenhagen, Denmark. Deciding to move back to Europe to be nearer family, I started a new role as Creative Director EMEA, at Vertic. Working predominantly in Pharmaceuticals, I’m enjoying the move into a more people centric field where my 9-5 has a benefit to peoples health – as opposed to affecting the point-of-sale decision making of instant coffee drinkers.
18 months ago I began a custom motorcycle platform called Ninety Nine Co. It started as a way to meet locals to ride with in Sydney but quickly became a platform of stories from the road, featured custom builds and a steady stream of interviews with the most influential people of the global riding scene. Now with 20 contributors to the website and over 100,000 followers across Social channels, it’s safe to say, it’s becoming a big part of my 5-9.
Timelines aside, my personal interests vary greatly. I’m an religious follower of the NBA & NFL, a passionate Country music fan (some would even say ‘advocate’) and a firm believer that freedom is best found on two motorised wheels.
“Ryan is one of those rare individuals you meet and think – this guy has a bright future… He’s a whirlwind of activity, his passion for his work is apparent in everything he does. Doing good work isn’t enough for, him, he needs to push it that extra step to a higher degree of excellence and perfection. If your clients aren’t blown away by the creative, they’ll be blown away by the articulate arguments and the confidence behind them.
Xander Black — Global Executive Creative Director, Havas
“Ryan is an extremely talented Digital Creative who during his time at HotHouse had an enormous impact on the creative growth of the business and it’s creative reputation with our clients. As a business director I admired how Ryan could argue his idea passionately with the client but still accommodate compromise at times to meet the clients constraints.“
